In the neighboring country Nepal, the havoc of nature has once again created a scene of terrible destruction. The situation has become extremely serious due to continuous torrential rains, swollen rivers and deadly landslides at many places. Many people, including 178 Indian citizens, have lost their lives due to this disaster, while more than 300 people are still reported missing. An empire of water and debris is visible everywhere from the capital Kathmandu to the India-Nepal border. The extent of the devastation is such that many major highways, bridges and link roads have been completely washed away. Relief and rescue work is going on continuously, but due to continuously falling stones and bad weather, the rescue teams are facing huge difficulties. Thousands of people trapped in the affected areas are looking for safe places and people are seen looking desperate in search of their loved ones. Nature wreaks havoc on Indian citizens. Every year a large number of Indian tourists, pilgrims and businessmen visit Nepal. Even at the time of this natural disaster, many Indians were present in different areas. Flash floods and landslides have caused the most damage in areas like Kathmandu Valley, Dhading, Makwanpur and Sindhupalchok. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu are in constant touch with the local administration. The helpline numbers issued by the Embassy are continuously receiving calls from family members from different states of India like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Many families are in deep shock due to loss of contact with their loved ones. Indian officials say that the first priority is to safely evacuate every citizen trapped in the affected areas. Nepali Army and Indian teams engaged in relief and rescue work. Nepali Army, Armed Police Forces and Nepal Police personnel are maintaining a 24-hour stand at Ground Zero. Where roads have been damaged, efforts are being made to airlift people through helicopters. The Government of India has also offered to provide all possible technical and logistics assistance to Nepal at its level. Indian disaster management teams are also on alert mode so that if needed, immediate action can be taken in the border areas. In many areas, communication has come to a complete halt due to falling of mobile network towers and electric poles, due to which it is taking time to gather accurate information about the missing people. Flood threat in India-Nepal border areas: Rivers originating from the hills of Nepal like Kosi, Gandak, Ghaghra and Bagmati are in spate. Their direct impact is on the border districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The administration has issued high alert in dozens of districts of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Due to continuous release of huge amount of water from barrages of Nepal, the risk of waterlogging in Terai areas has increased. People living in border villages have been instructed to move to safe places and the embankments are being continuously monitored. There is a huge crisis of medical and basic facilities at present in the disaster affected areas. There is a huge crisis of clean drinking water, medicines and food. The number of injured in hospitals is continuously increasing and many rural health centers have been submerged in flood waters. NGOs and local volunteers are trying to deliver food packets and essential medicines, but due to broken roads there is a significant delay in delivering relief material. In view of the possibility of epidemic and spread of water-borne diseases, chlorine tablets and life-saving medicines are being distributed by the Health Department.
