After causing massive devastation in the hilly and plain areas of Nepal due to torrential rains and landslides, the threat of deluge is now rapidly moving towards the Indian borders. Narayani river of Nepal (Gandak in India) has reached its fiercest form. The heavy water flow coming down from the mountains is rapidly entering the plains of India, causing severe flood crisis in the border districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to the Central Water Commission and the Meteorological Department, the water level of the Gandak River is rising unexpectedly and there is a strong possibility of storm waves up to three meters high in the water stream. Considering the seriousness of the threat, the disaster management departments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have declared 'red and high alert' in many sensitive districts. Heavy water discharge from Gandak Barrage, waves can rise up to 3 meters. The water level at Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage, located on the India-Nepal border, is close to crossing the danger mark. Due to continuous rains in the catchment areas of Nepal, lakhs of cusecs of water is being released by opening all the gates of the barrage. Water experts and engineers have warned that due to this heavy flow of water and fast speed, waves up to 3 meters i.e. about 10 feet high can arise in the middle of the river. This situation is creating tremendous pressure on the embankments built on both banks of the river. The administration has imposed a complete ban on operation of boats in the river waterways and low-lying areas with immediate effect. Preparations on war footing in Champaran, Gopalganj and Saran districts of Bihar. The first and direct impact of the surge of Gandak is being seen on the border districts of Bihar. The administrative staff in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan and Saran districts is on 24-hour alert mode. The work of evacuating hundreds of villages situated in Diara (river bank) areas has been expedited. The District Magistrates have canceled the leaves of the officers and are making announcements through loudspeakers at the local level, appealing to the villagers to move to higher and safer places. Several motorboats and rescue teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed at sensitive points so that in case of any emergency, relief operations can be started immediately. Strict monitoring on embankments in Kushinagar and Maharajganj of Uttar Pradesh. There is panic in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh due to the unexpected rise in the water level of Gandak River. The possibility of flood water entering the low-lying areas of Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria and Gorakhpur districts has increased. A team of engineers and employees of the Irrigation Department is monitoring day and night the Chhitauni Dam of Kushinagar and other sensitive ring dams including the Pipra-Piprasi embankment. Lakhs of sand bags, boulders and geo bags have been kept ready in advance to prevent any kind of erosion or leakage in the embankments. The local administration has fully activated flood posts and directed emergency medical teams to be prepared with anti-venom, life-saving medicines and chlorine tablets. The administration has appealed to the general public not to pay attention to any kind of rumors and follow the official guidelines. Cattle and household items have already been advised to be shifted to higher ground, relief camps or permanent government buildings. Instructions have been issued to keep mobile charging, torch, dry ration, clean drinking water and important documents safe in waterproof bags. The Chief Minister's offices of both the states are reviewing the situation moment by moment and the control rooms of the respective districts have been kept operational round the clock so that additional assistance can be sent immediately if needed.
