Automobile Desk: To create a stir in the 200cc super sports segment of the Indian two-wheeler market, Yamaha has officially introduced its all-new bike YZF-R2. After hoisting its flag in 150cc and 300cc+ categories till now, the company has played a bet on this new engine platform for the first time.
Direct competition is being considered with already established bikes like KTM RC 200. The company has launched this new entry-level race machine in three different trims. Its starting ex-showroom price in Delhi has been fixed at Rs 2.30 lakh, which goes up to Rs 2.53 lakh for the top variant.
Standard R2: ₹2,30,500 (Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray shades)
Mid Variant: ₹2,39,500 (Bidirectional Quickshifter, Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue Colour)
Top-spec R2 M: ₹2,53,000 (smart-key, adjustable suspension, faux-suede seats and 3D embossed badging)
In terms of design, Yamaha has not compromised with its famous R-DNA. At first glance, it appears to be a more muscular and wider version of the R15 V4. The front profile has a sharp cut fairing, central projector LED headlight and aggressive DRLs. The rear section is adorned with a block-style LED taillight on the lines of the YZF-R1. With a gross weight of 149 kg, the bike offers a great balance of fast speed on the track and easy handling in traffic.
Talking about engine and performance, the bike has a brand new 204cc, liquid-cooled, 4-valve, DOHC single-cylinder engine. This setup gives power of 26.5 PS and peak torque of 19.1 Nm. For transmission, a 6-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch has been provided. On paper this power delivery looks slightly better than the KTM RC 200 (25 PS). For rider convenience, there is a choice of three riding modes – Street, Sports and Rain with ride-by-wire technology.
To improve riding dynamics, the company has designed a new steel tube diamond frame in place of the R15's deltabox. For suspension, there is an inverted telescopic (USD) fork at the front and a monoshock setup at the rear. For safety, disc brakes on both wheels, dual-channel ABS and traction control system have been kept standard.
The cockpit has a 5-inch color TFT screen, which includes features like turn-by-turn navigation and smartphone connectivity. The mid and top variants also get bidirectional quickshifter for clutchless gear shifting. Apart from KTM RC 200, this bike will directly challenge Hero Karizma XMR and Pulsar RS 200 in the market.
