New Delhi. Flood has caused terrible devastation in Nepal. There was an outcry in Nepal due to the glacier burst in Tibet. More than 160 people have died so far in the Nepal floods. Hundreds of people are missing. Houses, bridges and buildings are destroyed. Where there were homes, there are now piles of debris. It is still difficult to estimate how much damage has been caused by this disaster in Nepal. Meanwhile, more danger is still looming over Nepal. Yes, 47 lakes of Nepal have become Time Ban. Can burst any time. If this happens then understand that there will be devastation. There is a danger of flood from 47 glacier lakes of Nepal. Many areas of Nepal are at high risk. This means that nature can wreak havoc on these areas at any time.

Actually, there are 47 glacier lakes present around the major rivers of Nepal. These have been identified as Potentially Dangerous Glacial Lakes (PDGLs). Scientists have warned that due to the bursting of these lakes, a large amount of water can suddenly flow downwards. This is called Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). This could cause massive devastation in the river valleys of Nepal. This assessment has been done by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Government of Nepal.

How many lakes?
Of these 47 lakes, 21 are in Nepal, while 25 lakes are located across the border in Tibet. These lakes are present in the upper part of those rivers, whose water comes towards Nepal towards the south. Therefore, if any of these lakes bursts, there can be huge damage to the villages, cities and essential infrastructure located below.

Most concerned about these rapidly growing lakes
Disaster management officials and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have placed some of the rapidly expanding lakes in the highest risk category. These also include such lakes, whose banks have natural walls made of ice, soil and stones. If they break, a large amount of water can suddenly flow downwards. According to disaster management officials and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), there is a need to take immediate steps to reduce the risks on these lakes and reduce the water level of the lake.

Among these, Lower Barun (Tallopokhari), Thulagi (Dona), Lumding Tso, Hongu-2/Chamlang South, Tso Rolpa and Imja Tso lakes are prominent. The danger from these lakes is greater in those hilly and mid-hilly districts, which are situated around the river valleys flowing below them. In case of flood, along with the population living here, roads, bridges, power projects and other important structures can also be damaged. In this way, more danger is looming in these areas.

More than 85 percent of the total regional risk is concentrated in vulnerable areas in eastern and central Nepal, i.e. Kosi and Bagmati basin areas. The districts most at risk include – Solukhumbu (the area comprising Doodh Koshi and Imja basins); Sankhuvasabha (along the Barun and Arun river valleys); Dolakha (along the Tama Koshi valley and threatened by Tso Rolpa); and Sindhupalchok (along the Bhote Koshi and Sun Koshi valleys, which are potentially at risk from bursting of trans-border lakes in Tibet).

The settlements located in the lower reaches of the river in Ramechhap, Kavreplanchok and Rasuwa, especially those along the banks of the Trishuli basin, are also at risk. Communities and hydropower assets in several districts in the directly affected downstream areas of the river in western and far-western Nepal, i.e. the Gandaki and Karnali basin areas, are at risk.

These include Manang and Lamjung along the Marsyangdi Basin below Thulagi Lake, Gorkha along the Burhi Gandaki Basin, Mustang and Myagdi along the Kali Gandaki Basin, as well as the remote valleys of Humla, including the Limi Valley and the Humla Karnali Corridor. The concern of experts has increased because when glacier lakes burst, floods come downstream very fast. Due to this, people may get very less time to reach safe places.
