Lifestyle Desk: In Indian homes, the morning often starts with puja. Offering flowers and garlands to God in the home temple is considered an important part of the puja. When flowers and garlands wither after the puja, many people throw them in the river or keep them under the tree, but doing so can have a negative impact on the environment.
Garbage increases in the rivers due to puja materials, while flowers, garlands and other materials start accumulating around the trees. In such a situation, instead of throwing away the flowers left after puja as garbage, they can be reused at home.
First separate the flowers and other ingredients.
After the puja, collect the flowers in a separate polybag or box with a lid. However, before placing flowers in it, separate plastic foil, thread, wire, clips, beads and other non-organic things. Keep only flowers, leaves and organic materials in one place. This will make it easier to reuse them.
Make home compost from flowers
Old flowers can best be used to make compost. Cut flowers and leaves into small pieces and put them in compost along with dry leaves and other organic waste. Over time this organic material turns into compost, which can be used in home pots and plants. This not only enables re-use of puja material but also reduces the organic waste generated from the house.
Make decoration with dried flowers
Flowers like roses, marigold and jasmine can be dried thoroughly and used in home decoration. A natural look can be given to the house by keeping dried flowers in a glass jar, bowl or decorative plate. Small DIY projects can also be made with these. Dried flowers can also prove useful during craft activities with children.
Make potpourri with flowers
Potpourri can be prepared from dried flowers to add fragrance to the house. For this, mix well dried flower petals with some fragrant natural material and keep them in a decorative bowl. It can be placed around the room or place of worship. However, before using, ensure that the flowers are clean and do not have any chemical or pesticide residues on them.
Use in making natural colors
The option of preparing natural colors from colored flowers can also be adopted. Especially color can be extracted from marigold and rose petals. These can be used in paper decoration, crafts and other homemade creative works. In this way, old flowers can become a useful and fun craft material for children too.
Instead of flowing in the river, adopt this method
Instead of leaving puja flowers near a river, pond or tree, it is better to store them separately in the house. Put the flowers and leaves in the compost and dispose of them properly by separating them from plastic, thread, wire or other materials. With a little care, the responsibility for the environment can also be fulfilled along with the tradition of worship. Therefore, next time you take out old flower garlands from the temple, instead of throwing them out as garbage, try to make better use of them at home.
