It has been a long summer for Liverpool. Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz both came in early during the transfer window, before Ronald Araujo joined on loan from Barcelona a couple of weeks ago.

Liverpool have now shifted their focus towards strengthening their attacking options. The Reds have agreed a £120m deal with Paris Saint-Germain for the transfer of Bradley Barcola.

They have also had bids turned down for both Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr in recent days.

However, Liverpool have so far been unable to reinforce their midfield, which was an obvious weakness during their disastrous title defence last season.

In fact, their midfield resources have become even lighter after Curtis Jones left for Inter Milan in a £30m move.

Those midfield issues were on show once again in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United on the opening weekend.

With just five days now left in the transfer window, head coach Andoni Iraola has offered Liverpool supporters a small reason for optimism.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before Liverpool’s meeting with Nottingham Forest, Iraola was asked about the club’s transfer plans for the rest of the window.

When asked whether Liverpool could still add more players to the squad in the coming days, he said: “There are certain things we can but it’s true we need players in the wide areas.”

“I’m sure if we can improve other areas we will but I don’t know how the market is going to finish. I have to be patient as well as you.”

“It’s very uncomfortable for me as you are dealing with uncertainties all the time. In four or five days we will know what we have and then we can make proper plans.”

Iraola has made his position on the current make-up of Liverpool’s squad very clear. It is now up to the Liverpool hierarchy and sporting director Richard Hughes to give him the strongest possible chance of succeeding.
