Sri Lanka's young batsman Sonal Dinusha snatched victory from India in the Colombo Test. This 25 year old left handed batsman also scored a century in the second innings. He made the match a draw by playing an unbeaten inning of 133 runs in 264 balls. Dinusha had scored 103 runs in Sri Lanka's first innings. However, his team could reach only a score of 290. India declared its first innings on the score of 503/9. In such a situation, Team India got a lead of 213 runs and captain Shubman Gill asked Sri Lanka to play follow on.

India gave 6 shocks to the Sri Lankan team which came to play follow on till the score of 218. Now Team India seemed very close to victory, because Sri Lanka had only 4 wickets left and they had a lead of only 5 runs. Dinusha, along with Keshara Nuwantha (46), first got Sri Lanka out of trouble and then took the team beyond 400 by taking out the tired Indian bowlers.

The Sri Lankan team had reached 429 runs at the loss of 9 wickets in the last session of the fifth day of the game (27 August). Now there was not much time left in the day's play and the result of the match was not visible. In such a situation, both the teams joined hands. Dinusha remained at the crease till the end. He achieved a special achievement during his courageous innings.

First Sri Lankan to do so

By scoring centuries in both the innings against India, Dinusha did something which no Sri Lankan player had been able to do in Test cricket till date. He became the first Sri Lankan to score two centuries (in the second and third innings) in a Test match in which his team had to follow on. Talking about world cricket, till now only two players could do this. Before Dinusha, this feat was achieved by Vijay Hazare against Australia in Adelaide in 1948 and Andy Flower against South Africa in Harare in 2001.
