Hyundai Motor India is all set to make a significant splash in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market with the upcoming launch of its new compact EV SUV, internally codenamed HE1i. The highly anticipated electric SUV is expected to debut in December 2026, with its official market launch slated for January 2027 at the prestigious Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
This strategic move underscores Hyundai's commitment to the Indian EV landscape, aiming to offer a highly localised and affordable electric SUV positioned strategically below the Creta Electric in its portfolio. Details were provided by Auto India Daily
Designed for India, Made in India
The HE1i is more than just another electric vehicle; it's a testament to Hyundai's 'Make in India' initiative. The compact EV SUV is being meticulously designed and manufactured within India, with production set to take place at Hyundai's state-of-the-art Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu. A key aspect of this localisation effort includes the use of Exide-sourced batteries, further driving down costs and enhancing competitiveness. Jose Munoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, previously confirmed the development, stating, “A brand-new compact SUV is coming, designed and localised in India.” Tarun Garg, MD & CEO, HMIL, has also expressed confidence, suggesting the HE1i could be a "gamechanger" in the mass-market EV segment.Platform and Expected Specifications
The HE1i will be built on the E-GMP (K) platform, a dedicated electric vehicle architecture designed for highly localised production in India. This dedicated EV platform is expected to optimise battery packaging, electric motor integration, and cabin space. While official specifications for the India-spec model are yet to be fully revealed, the HE1i is expected to be offered in both standard range and long-range versions. Detailed battery pack options, range figures, and motor specifications are anticipated to be disclosed closer to launch, though the model is expected to be highly competitive in its performance metrics. Confirmed features include a next-generation infotainment system, possibly the Pleos Connect system, and Level 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS).Competitive Landscape and Pricing
This new compact EV SUV is squarely aimed at the burgeoning sub-4-metre electric SUV segment, where it will directly rival established players like the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Punch EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and the upcoming Kia Syros EV. Exact pricing for the HE1i will be crucial, and while not officially announced, it is expected to be highly competitive, with top-spec variants likely to fall within the mass-premium, sub-Rs. 25 lakh bracket. This aggressive pricing strategy, combined with high localisation, is expected to make the HE1i a formidable contender in the market. With its strategic positioning, localised manufacturing, and a suite of modern features, the Hyundai HE1i is poised to reshape consumer expectations for affordable electric SUVs in India.READ NEXT
