Researchers at Binghamton University in America conducted a study to understand the relationship between the habit of taking screenshots and memory. Research has found that people who take a screenshot of information may have more trouble remembering that information later. Researchers have named this effect “Photo Taking Impairment Effect”.

Those who took screenshots remembered less information

During the study, students were shown things like paintings, photographs and sketches. Some students were asked to take pictures i.e. screenshots, while some students were asked just to look carefully. Later, when the students were asked questions to these pictures, the answers of those who had only looked carefully were more accurate. At the same time, students who took screenshots remembered less information.

Why can memory become weak?

According to experts, while taking a screenshot, the person’s attention goes to saving the information instead of understanding it. Due to this, the brain reduces the process of remembering that information deeply. Apart from this, a situation of “cognitive offloading” can occur in the brain. That is, when the brain knows that the information is safe in the phone, it tries less to remember it.
