An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Nepal on Thursday. The shock was mild and there is no news of any major damage, but it has come at a time when there is a threat of flood in the low-lying areas again due to the formation of a new lake on the Bhotekoshi river.

Earth trembles again amid 392 deaths, 1500 missing

Landslides and floods near the Tibet border in Nepal had caused huge devastation. So far 392 people have lost their lives in this accident, while about 1500 people are still missing. Relief and rescue work is going on continuously.

Meanwhile, an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude further frightened people. Although the administration has said that this shock is not directly to the previous floods, but the continuous incidents in the hilly areas have increased the alert.

New lake built in Bhotekoshi, 20 lakh cubic meter water stored

The biggest threat now comes from the new lake formed near the origin of the Bhotekoshi river. In Rasuwa district, the flow of the river has been stopped due to debris, due to which water has started accumulating there. According to information received from China, till Thursday morning, about 20 lakh cubic meters of water had accumulated in this lake.

Another 30 lakh cubic meters of water is expected to arrive in the next three days. If this lake breaks, there may be sudden floods in the areas situated below. For this reason the administration has issued a high alert.

Advice not to go to the river bank, administration keeps an eye on the lake

In view of the danger, people living in the lower areas of Bhotekoshi river have been asked to stay away from the river banks. Passengers, security personnel and relief teams have also been advised to exercise caution. Officials are constantly monitoring the lake through drones and satellites so that if the situation worsens, people can be immediately evacuated to a safe place.

What was the real reason for the last flood?

There were many speculations regarding the cause of the last flood. Initially it was linked to an earthquake, but later satellite images revealed that a large part of the Lirung Glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border had broken and fallen down.

The vibration that was thought to be an earthquake was actually caused by the breaking of glacier rock and ice. Heavy debris blocked the course of the river and then the strong current engulfed the entire area. Now water is accumulating again at the same place.
