Only five days are left before the transfer window shuts, and Manchester United are still no nearer to bringing in a new left-back.
Luke Shaw’s troubling injury history means Michael Carrick cannot rely on him to remain available, particularly with the Red Devils competing in four competitions this season.
The head coach also lacks a specialist senior deputy for the England international. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are both capable of filling in on that side, but both are much more comfortable at right-back.
Harry Amass and Diego Leon are two options Carrick can call upon, but INEOS do not believe either player is yet ready for that jump in quality.
Amass has already featured for the senior side under Ruben Amorim, but the co-owners are keen to move him on permanently.
Following an impressive loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday during the first half of last season, the young full-back came back aiming to impress Carrick.
He then put together a respectable pre-season, but United believe his development would be better served away from Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are said to value the 19-year-old at just £7 million, with interest from the Championship growing rapidly.
The Sun has reported that United want a new left-back in through the door before approving the departure of the England Under-19 international.
“Harry Amass’s United future depends on whether the club sign a left-back in the closing days of the window.
“Amass, 19, spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City in the Championship but has not made a competitive appearance since January because of a hamstring injury.
“The academy graduate is fit, but his resale value is low, and that has led to very little movement in the market.”
As for Leon, United are considering an EFL loan for him. The hope will be that the 20-time English league champions can still bring in a backup before the window closes.
