New Delhi, August 28 (IANS). The Income Tax Department on Friday said that more than 7 crore income tax returns (ITR) have been filed so far for the assessment year (AY) 2026-27. The department has appealed to those taxpayers with business or professional income who do not need to get their accounts audited to file returns early.
In a post shared on social media platform
“More than 7 crore ITRs have already been filed for assessment year 2026-27,” the department said. Along with this, eligible taxpayers have been advised not to wait for the last minute and file returns as soon as possible.
“August 31, 2026 is the due date for filing ITR for assessment year 2026-27 for taxpayers who have business or professional income and are not subject to audit. Do not wait till the last minute and file your return today,” the Income Tax Department said in its post.
This appeal of the department has come at a time when the last date fixed for non-audit category businessman and professional taxpayers is approaching.
Generally, more traffic and technical pressure is seen on the portal in the last days, hence the department is emphasizing on filing returns on time.
Earlier in July, the Income Tax Department had informed that more than 5.9 crore income tax returns were filed till the deadline of July 31, 2026. At that time, the department had thanked the taxpayers and said that timely compliance and trust of the taxpayers accelerates the development of the country.
According to the department, more than 40 lakh returns were filed on the last date of July 31 itself. This was the deadline set for individual taxpayers and entities who were not required to get their accounts audited.
Latest figures show a large number of taxpayers with business and professional income have filed their returns even after the July deadline, taking the total number to over 7 crore. The Income Tax Department believes that tax compliance is continuously improving with the expansion of digital systems and online filing facilities.
