Mitsubishi is launching its iconic Pajero in a facelift on September 2, which will see a Triton-based ladder frame, S-AWC four-wheel drive and new off-road technology.

Mitsubishi will officially launch the 5th generation Pajero on September 2, 2026, after the last generation car was discontinued from the international market in 2021. The car returns to body-on-frame construction once again, a major change from the previous model's monocoque platform. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the SUV will use a high-strength ladder frame inspired by the Triton.

However, the new Pajero's cabin, front and rear suspensions have been specially developed for this car. The new Pajero will combine its ladder frame architecture with Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. The company says that the chassis and suspension are designed to handle big bumps, steep slopes, rough roads, hilly areas, rocky terrain and mud with ease, while maintaining excellent vehicle control on paved roads.

While the Japanese automaker is yet to announce the full details of the four-wheel-drive, reports suggest the SUV could get a version of the Triton's Super Select 4WD-II system. Mitsubishi has also confirmed the return of the 'multi meter' in modern digital form. Inspired by the typical instrumentation of older Pajero generations, the system can display altitude, compass direction, outside temperature, vehicle slope as well as left-right torque distribution.

Mitsubishi is likely to make the car's cabin more premium than the previous Pajero, while retaining the functionality required of a true off-road vehicle. It is likely to get a turbo diesel engine and a diesel hybrid powertrain, with future hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions also being discussed.

The original model was launched in 1982 and sold more than 32.5 lakh units in more than 170 countries across the world in four generations. The brand also has a long history in motorsport, having won the Dakar Rally 12 times since 1983, including seven in a row.

Mitsubishi is no longer looking at the Pajero as a one-off restoration, but is treating this new SUV as a flagship model. They plan to develop a whole series of cars under this name in the future.
