RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat program New York: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat is going to give a speech at an event in New York. The event came into limelight when NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani commented on RSS. This program is being organized during the centenary year of RSS. Mohan Bhagwat reached New York on Tuesday. He is on a tour of three countries – America, Canada and UK.

Date and time of RSS chief's program

RSS chief Bhagwat will speak at an event named Universal Oneness Celebrations at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 29 between 2 pm and 5:30 pm (ET). This event is being organized by the 'American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue' (AHEAD) forum. It says that through performance and creative expression, attendees will experience, not just hear, what it means to believe in all of creation as one.

Controversy regarding RSS event

Before the event, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that it is extremely worrying to see the growth of a movement in India which, according to him, is based on an exclusionary vision.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mamdani expressed his opposition to the rally, but also said that the city government probably does not have the authority to cancel any private event.

Zohran Madani said that I also stand here as the first Indian-American mayor in the history of our city. My mother's family is still in India. The idea of India that my family taught me and that I came to know closely, was of a society that was inclusive of all, of a secular republic that believed in the belonging of every person in India.

'Be alert, avoid confrontation'

An American advocacy group of Hindu-Americans has issued a community alert for those attending Mohan Bhagwat's New York event. In this, they have been appealed to avoid confrontation with the activists opposing the program on Saturday. Hindu American Foundation (HAF), a US-based non-profit organization, has warned that there may be attempts to disrupt and cancel the 'Universal Oneness Celebration' (which will be attended by Bhagwat) to be held at the Infosys Theater in Madison Square Garden on Saturday (August 29, 2026). Hindus for Human Rights and other like-minded organizations have planned a protest outside Madison Square Garden on Saturday, coinciding with the RSS chief's event.

Shravya Tadepalli, deputy executive director of 'Hindus for Human Rights', said that Mohan Bhagwat does not represent Hindus. He leads an extremist Hindu nationalist movement that has promoted violence, discrimination and fear among minority communities. HAF also calls on New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to fulfill his duty to protect all New Yorkers, including those attending the event at Madison Square Garden, and to guarantee the safety and civil rights of all. HAF said that if you are attending, maintain civility and respect the right of all people to assemble, protest and express their views.
