India’s Neeraj Chopra qualified for the 2026 Diamond League final on Thursday, having accumulated a total of 12 points in the standings.
Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist, currently stands sixth in the standings, having competed in two Diamond League meets this season.
He had finished fourth at the 2026 Diamond League meet in Doha with a throw of 85.69m in June, before recording a season best 88.05m at the Lausanne meet in August earlier this month to finish second.
The two meets were enough to earn Chopra a spot at the 2026 Diamond League final, which will be held on 4-5 September in Brussels, Belgium next month.
The others to have qualified for men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Diamond League final include Rumesh Pathirage, Anderson Peters, Keshorn Walcott, Curtis Thompson, and Julius Yego.
With Chopra slowly clawing back to best since his heartbreak at the 2025 World Athletics Championships last year, the 2026 Diamond League field will be a tough test for the Indian as he looks to reclaim his Diamond League final title from four years ago.
Chopra in line to qualify for World Athletics Ultimate C’ships
Meanwhile, Chopra is also on course to qualify for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest from September 11-13.
Eight throwers will compete in the men’s javelin event and Chopra is currently at the seventh spot. Another Indian, Sachin Yadav is at the eighth spot but the final list of eligible athletes will be published on September 6.
Pathirage, Peters, Thompson, and Julian Weber are ahead of Chopra in the Road to Ultimate Championships.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan and Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago have qualified as reigning Olympic and world champion respectively.
The winner of the Diamond League Finals in Brussels will also be invited in the Ultimate Championships.
The other five will be picked on the basis of world rankings with the qualification period from September 2, 2025 to September 1, 2026.
The inaugural Ultimate Championship will pit Olympic champions, world champions and Diamond League winners against one another in an ambitious project of World Athletics.
It will be a biennial event to provide a season-ending championship in years when there is no outdoor World Championships.
The total prize purse this year will be USD 10 million, with gold medallists winning USD 150,000.
