York City reportedly made a determined attempt to beat rival clubs to the signing of Manchester United midfielder Dan Gore, but their move was unsuccessful.

With breaking into the first team still his main aim, Gore is expected to head out on another loan spell to continue his progress away from Old Trafford.

The Carrington academy product first joined Port Vale on loan in 2024, but that spell was ended after only one appearance because of a serious injury.

A shoulder problem, which initially emerged during his time with the senior squad, then kept him out for the first half of the 2024/25 season.

He then secured another loan move to Rotherham, but that stint was also affected by fitness concerns. However, the Millers appeared to have seen enough potential and brought him back for the 2025/26 campaign. His second spell proved far more productive than the first.

Gore went on to make 34 League One appearances and provided three assists. He also took part in United’s pre-season programme.

A recent report previously carried stated that Gore is set to join Luton Town on loan before the summer transfer window shuts. It is understood that Gore is admired by Jack Wilshere, who believes the young midfielder can play an important role in their push for promotion from League One.

United still regard Gore highly, and his situation is due to be reassessed next summer once he returns from Luton.

However, a fresh report has suggested that he could have left United on a permanent basis.

According to Peter O’Rourke, York City made a strong move for Gore.

The Football Insider journalist wrote, “Luton Town are set to sign Manchester United midfielder Dan Gore on loan.”

“York City made an ambitious move to sign Gore in a permanent deal. Several other League One and League Two clubs were also chasing Gore.”

Meanwhile, United are next in action on Sunday when they welcome Ipswich Town.
