According to the information received by the media, it is being told that Supreme Court lawyer and BJP leader Nazia Khan has filed a complaint with the police in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh against the remarks made by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Manusmriti.
Nazia Khan alleges that Rahul Gandhi has selectively presented a part of the ancient text Manusmriti and distorted its context, thereby trying to create a wrong perception about this text in the society. Rahul Gandhi had made this comment while addressing the students in the ‘Students’ Echo’ program organized in Pune on August 22, 2026. While talking about women’s freedom and identity, he quoted a part of Manusmriti,
Rahul Gandhi had said, “Manusmriti says that in childhood, a woman belongs to her father, in her youth, to her husband and when her husband dies, she belongs to her sons. A woman should never be independent. He further said that these words are shameful and the identity of women should not be determined by any relationship, they are only their own masters.
Advocate Nazia Khan says that the chapter which Rahul Gandhi mentioned actually talks about the responsibilities of father, husband and son towards the women of their house, but Rahul Gandhi distorted it in the form of snatching the freedom of women.
He said that it is completely wrong to interpret only a few words or a chapter without reading the entire book and make assumptions about the entire Manusmriti on the basis of that.
Nazia Khan also raised in her complaint that Rahul Gandhi used pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in the background during the students’ interaction. He asked whether the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister has ever asked anyone to read or follow Manu Smriti after the BJP government came to power?
