New Delhi: CNG drivers in Delhi-NCR have been hit by yet another price hike. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has increased the price of CNG by ₹3.89 per kg. The new rates are effective from 6 AM on Saturday, 29 August 2026. The price of CNG in Delhi was earlier ₹83.09 per kg, which has now increased to ₹86.98 per kg.
The price hike will have a direct impact on the cost of auto-rickshaws, taxis, cabs and CNG-powered private vehicles. Especially among the drivers who drive autos for daily income, resentment is being seen over the price hike.
‘CNG gets expensive, but the fare is the same’
After the CNG price hike, an auto-rickshaw driver said that this is not only a problem for the drivers, but also for the common people. The price of CNG has been increasing continuously, but the fare received from passengers has not increased accordingly.
According to the driver, be it online booking or direct travel, mostly the fixed fare is available. On the other hand, the daily cost of running an auto continues to rise as the cost of fuel increases.
All CNG drivers will be affected
Another auto driver said that the CNG price hike is not limited to auto-rickshaws only. CNG is used in many types of vehicles including cars, taxis, buses. So the price hike may affect a large number of motorists and ultimately passengers as well.
As fuel is one of the biggest daily expenses for CNG based commercial vehicles, their operating cost will increase after the new prices.
Why did IGL increase CNG prices?
According to IGL, an important part of natural gas required for CNG is obtained through imported Liquefied Natural Gas i.e. LNG. The ongoing conflict in West Asia and uncertainty in the global market have led to a significant increase in spot LNG prices.
According to the company, the cost of gas procurement continues to rise as international LNG prices remain at high levels. To partially offset this increased cost, it became necessary to increase the retail price of CNG by ₹ 3.89 per kg.
Big jump in international LNG prices
European TTF gas prices rose by around 105 per cent and Asian JKM LNG prices by around 113 per cent from the end of February to August 27, according to IGL data. The company cited conditions in West Asia, uncertainty over the movement of LNG cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz and increased demand for pre-winter gas storage in Europe as factors behind the price hike.
The burden on the pockets of common people will increase
The new hike in CNG prices is likely to increase daily travel and transport costs in Delhi. Daily fuel expenses will increase especially for auto, taxi and cab drivers. If the increased cost on motorists persists for a long time, it cannot be ruled out that it will have an impact on future travel fares as well.
IGL says that despite the price hike, the company will continue its efforts to reduce the cost of gas procurement to ensure that CNG remains a competitive and clean vehicle fuel compared to other alternative fuels.
