RBI Alert: With the increasing use of digital banking, cases of cyber fraud are also coming to light. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advised customers to beware of frauds in the name of KYC update. To scare people, fraudsters can send such messages or calls, claiming that if KYC is not updated, the bank account will be closed or blocked.

In such cases, customers should first verify the information instead of taking any action out of panic. RBI has told people an easy way to avoid such frauds-Stop, think, and then act safely.

How do fraudsters trap you in the name of KYC?

Cyber criminals often send a message to the bank customer. In this, you may be asked to click on a link to update KYC immediately. Many times it is also written in the message that if the process is not completed within the stipulated time, the banking service will be stopped.

This kind of pressure may force the customer to open the link or share their information without thinking. This is why any suspicious message, phone call or link should not be immediately trusted.

RBI’s first rule- wait

If you suddenly get a message or call in the name of KYC and is asked to take immediate action, then stop first. Do not open any link in fear or haste.

Instead of panicking after seeing the threat of account closure or blocking, first check whether the message has actually come from your bank or financial institution.

Second rule- Think and check (RBI Alert)

Before accepting any KYC message as genuine, it is important to check its authenticity. If a link is given in the message, use your bank’s official website or mobile app instead of visiting that link directly. If needed, the information can also be confirmed by contacting the official helpline of the bank.

Be especially cautious of messages from unknown numbers and suspicious websites. Do not consider the website as the official website of the bank just by looking at its name.

Third rule- act safely

Take any action only after examining the message. Avoid clicking on any unknown links and do not share your confidential banking information with anyone.

OTP, ATM or Debit Card PIN, Internet Banking Password and other sensitive information Should not be made available to any unknown person through phone, message or any link.

What to do if you get fake KYC message?

If you get any suspicious message or call regarding KYC update, then instead of using the number or link given in it, contact through the official channel of your bank. Getting information from the bank’s app, official website or verified helpline is a safer way.

Remember, cyber fraudsters often take advantage of fear and haste. Therefore, instead of taking immediate action after seeing any KYC alert, first confirm it. Stop, Think and Act Safely—This precaution can help keep your banking information safe.
