Kathmandu. Another danger has emerged amid the devastation caused by the severe flash flood in Nepal. China has warned Nepal that a natural lake in the upper part of the Lende river system could collapse at any time. According to China, the color of the lake water is continuously getting darker, which is being considered a sign of possible danger. If a natural dam breaks, the flow of water in the river can suddenly increase significantly.
According to media reports, China has informed Nepal’s Foreign Ministry about this possible threat. According to China’s preliminary assessment, if the lake breaks, the flow of water could reach a maximum of 500 cubic meters per second. However, China says that even if some part of the natural dam breaks, the water can remain within the limits of the river and the possibility of flood spreading over a large area can be limited.
Natural lake formed after breaking of glacier
It is being told that during this week’s severe flash flood in Nepal and Tibet, a huge amount of debris came down due to breaking of the glacier. This debris stopped the flow of the river and formed a natural dam there. A new lake was formed due to accumulation of water behind the dam. This lake is formed around the confluence of Chochen River on the China side and Purepu River on the Nepal side.
According to China’s Water Resources Ministry, by Friday about 25 lakh cubic meters of water had accumulated in the lake and the water level was rising. In view of the danger, China has advised people living in low-lying areas to be alert. The situation of the lake is being continuously monitored through drones and satellites.
Flow can be up to 500 cubic meters per second
China has prepared a flood model to estimate the potential damage. According to initial estimates, if the natural dam breaks, the flow of water in the river system could reach 500 cubic meters per second. However, according to experts’ models, in case of partial dam breach, water may remain within the river banks. In such a situation, there is a possibility of the water level of the river rising rapidly, but the risk of water spreading out on a large scale is said to be relatively low.

According to China, on Friday the water of the lake opened and started flowing into the Trishuli river. The situation was said to be under control by noon. Despite this, there is concern in Nepal, because if the natural dam completely breaks, water may suddenly increase in the low-lying areas.
626 people died due to flood in Nepal
Nepal is already struggling with severe flash floods. So far, 626 deaths have been reported in Wednesday’s flood, while seven deaths have been confirmed in Tibet also. The floods have caused massive damage to roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure in many parts of Nepal. Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas.
