Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo is poised to join Premier League rivals Manchester City in a setback for Tottenham.
That is according to David Ornstein, who reported on Saturday evening that the Netherlands international was edging closer to a move to the Etihad Stadium.
The development will be a significant disappointment for Tottenham, who had marked the forward out as one of their leading targets heading into the closing days of the summer transfer window.
However, after City sold Savio to the north London club for £75million, they now appear to have acted swiftly in an attempt to bring in Gakpo.
According to Ornstein, the 27-year-old had a three-way choice to make: remain at Anfield, move to Spurs, or sign for City.
He has opted for the last of those options, where he will battle for a spot across the front line.
Since arriving from PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has featured mainly from the left side for Liverpool, though he is also capable of playing as a centre-forward. City are now short in that position after Omar Marmoush followed Savio to Tottenham on an initial loan agreement that also contains a £50million obligation to buy.
It is understood the Dutch international has already agreed personal terms with City, who are now trying to finalise a deal with their Premier League rivals.
Liverpool are expected to approve Gakpo’s departure after reaching an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, the Reds’ top target this summer, in a transfer worth up to £123m.
Gakpo could become the latest major name to leave Merseyside this summer after Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah all departed on free transfers, while Curtis Jones was sold to Inter Milan.
