In the era of increasing financial fraud and cyber crime, misuse of PAN card (Permanent Account Number) has become a serious concern. Through fintech platforms and instant loan apps, a personal loan or consumer loan is taken in the name of an unknown person using the PAN card photocopy or number. The victim does not become aware of this fraud until he starts receiving calls from recovery agents or the CIBIL score is found to be bad when he applies for a new loan. It is very important to check the active loans linked to your PAN from time to time to avoid any unauthorized financial liability.

Credit Information Companies (CICs) authorized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintain complete records of all types of loans and credit cards linked to your PAN card:

  • 1. Official Credit Bureaus (CIBIL / Experian / CRIF High Mark / Equifax):

    • CIBIL official website cibil.com or Experian (experian.in) go to.

    • Generate Free Annual Credit Report by entering your name, date of birth, PAN number and mobile number.

  • 2. Financial Apps and Banking Portals:

  • 3. Income Tax AIS (Annual Information Statement – AIS):

If while checking your credit report you find a loan account that you never applied for, take these steps immediately:

  • Report to the concerned lender (Bank/NBFC): Send an email in writing to the Customer Support and Nodal Grievance Officer of that bank or loan app and inform them that the loan is unauthorized and issued fraudulently.

  • File a Dispute with a Credit Bureau: Online against that specific loan account number on CIBIL or respective credit bureau portal ‘Raise a Dispute’ Enter ticket.

  • FIR on cyber crime portal: National Cyber ​​Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP)cybercrime.gov.in) or lodge a complaint of Identity Theft / Financial Fraud on 1930 helpline and save the receipt.

  • RBI Ombudsman: If the bank does not resolve your issue within 30 days, you can contact the RBI CMS portal (cms.rbi.org.in) File a complaint at.

  • Do not share PAN unnecessarily: Avoid sending the photocopy or image of your PAN card to any non-trusted app or unknown person.

  • Provide masked or watermarked copy: Wherever it is necessary to give a photocopy of the PAN card, cross-sign it clearly writing the date and purpose (eg: ‘Only for Bank Account Opening – Not for Loan’).

  • Regular Credit Monitoring: Keep checking your credit report and CIBIL score at least once every 3 to 6 months.
