Timberwolves Waive John Konchar | Hoops Rumors
Sandy Verma | August 30, 2026 11:24 AM CST

As expected, the Timberwolves have waived John Koncharthe team announced Saturday night in a press release.

The 30-year-old swingman was acquired from Utah earlier in the day in a trade designed to clear enough cap space for the signing of Jonathan Kuminga. Josh Green‘s expiring $14.68MM contract was sent to the Jazz in exchange for Konchar ($6.17MM) and Cody Williams ($6.02MM).

Although the press release doesn’t specify, Minnesota was expected to use the stretch provision to spread Konchar’s cap hit across three seasons, resulting in annual cap charges of roughly $2.06MM. Today is the deadline to waive and stretch contracts ahead of the upcoming season.

After spending his first six and a half seasons with Memphis, Konchar was traded twice in the past six months. The Grizzlies sent him to Utah at the February deadline in a blockbuster seven-player deal that also included Jaren Jackson Jr.

Konchar was part of the rotation during his brief time with the Jazz, appearing in 26 games (seven starts) and averaging 5.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 26.2 minutes per night while posting .445/.250/.774 shooting numbers.

Assuming he clears waivers on Monday, Konchar will become an unrestricted free agent.
