Mandya (Karnataka). Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday said that disabled people are very close to his heart. He recalled that when he was the Chief Minister, he had created a system by which he could directly convey his views to the Legislative Assembly. Kumaraswamy said, “Persons with disabilities are very close to my heart. When I was the Chief Minister, they used to come straight to Vidhana Soudha. It was I who had made such an arrangement.”
The Union Minister was speaking after distributing assistive devices to 299 disabled people at Ambedkar Bhawan in Mandya. These devices were provided by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
He said, “Persons with disabilities do not need sympathy. Instead they should be provided opportunities to live a life full of dignity and self-respect. They should also get equal opportunities and everyone has a responsibility towards them.”
Kumaraswamy said battery-operated tricycles, artificial limbs, hearing aids and other assistive devices were distributed to about 299 beneficiaries.
These facilities were provided under the CSR initiative of SAIL and Alimco under the Ministry of Steel. He said that a total of accessories worth Rs 50 lakh were distributed.
Kumaraswamy also inaugurated a digital assessment system at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS).
The facility has been set up at a cost of Rs 1 crore provided by Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) under its CSR fund. The Union Minister visited the hospital in the morning and inaugurated the digital assessment system.
Kumaraswamy visited the government school at Halali village, where he inaugurated two well-furnished classrooms built with a grant of Rs 32.50 lakh under the CSR initiative of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS India).
He also laid the foundation stone of two new classrooms in the former Municipal College, Mandya city. The project is being funded by AM/NS India under its CSR program with a grant of Rs 32.50 lakh.
Kumaraswamy participated in CSR initiatives in Mandya with a total investment of Rs 2.15 crore. After inaugurating two new classrooms at Halali Government School, Kumaraswamy said that the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving high priority to education. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, education is being given top priority. The central government is taking steps to provide quality infrastructure to schools and colleges,” he said.
