West Brom are set to confirm the signing of Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer, who is expected to become their ninth arrival before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
According to reports, head coach James Morrison said the deal, initially worth £3million, is close after Albion made a strong push and beat Middlesbrough and Premier League newcomers Hull to his signature.
Collyer watched on at the Riverside as Middlesbrough claimed a 3-1 win, handing Albion their first Championship defeat of the season. He was seen in club colours alongside his new team-mates as the final formalities were being completed.
Summer signing number eight, winger Kareem Tunde, 21, arrived from Levante for around £2.5million and made his debut late in the match. He looked lively in a 15-minute cameo and tested goalkeeper Radek Vitek after coming on in place of youngster Harry Whitwell.
Morrison said Tunde gives the side a more direct option and had only linked up with the squad on Thursday. He added that he is excited by the new arrivals and how quickly they are settling in, while noting that the group’s stay in Durham had helped.
Morrison named the same starting line-up that beat Burnley in the league six days earlier, undoing the six EFL Cup changes made at St James’ Park. Aune Heggebo returned to the bench after serving a two-match suspension for handball, while Felix Horn Myhre offered additional midfield cover.
Heggebo was introduced midway through the second half but was unable to change the game. Morrison said the striker has also been dealing with an illness during his suspension, with staff keeping a close eye on the bug.
