GST Rules : Once again a big decision may be taken regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The 57th meeting of the GST Council is scheduled to be held on September 12 in New Delhi. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will preside over this meeting. A meeting of officers will also be held on September 11, the day before the meeting. The GST Council consists of the Finance Ministers of both the Union and the States. Notably, this meeting is taking place after more than a year. The previous meeting was held on September 3 and 4, 2025. Major changes in GST rates and slabs were made in that meeting.

The new GST system came into force on 22 September 2025. Under this two tax slabs of 5% and 18% have been created. 40% GST is imposed on expensive and certain special items. Earlier, four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% were applicable.

For larger businesses the rules can be simpler

According to media reports, the September 12 meeting may discuss simplifying the GST registration process for large businesses. Simplification may be considered, especially for businesses that spend Rs. Passes tax credit of more than 2.5 lakhs. Currently, the GST registration process for large businesses is not uniform across the country. Central and state GST departments follow different procedures, causing inconvenience and uncertainty for businesses.

The process has already become easier for small businesses

The Council may also consider automating the GST deregistration process and making other changes. The aim is to simplify and streamline the process. In the September 2025 meeting, a simplified GST registration scheme for small and low-risk businesses was approved. The scheme came into effect from November 1.

Small and low risk businesses can avail this scheme based on GST system data. Additionally, Rs. Businesses with a monthly output tax liability of up to 2.5 lakhs can also opt for this scheme. Currently, around 16.8 million businesses are registered under GST in the country. Therefore, changes in the registration process may affect a significant number of businesses.
