Sony Music Anthropic controversy: Sony Music, Warner Chappell, and several other music publishers sued Anthropic, accusing it of running a “blatant campaign” of intellectual property theft. Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell and several other music publishers have sued Anthropic and its co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, alleging that the AI Lab conducted “a brazen campaign of illegally torrenting, scraping and downloading copyrighted compositions.”

The lawsuit, which was filed late Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, was first reported by Music Business Worldwide. Publishers have accused Anthropic of “blatant theft” by using thousands of copyrighted works to train its AI Model Cloud.
The company has been accused of obtaining millions of copies of books, including books containing song lyrics and music sheets, through illegal torrenting.
“We do not agree with the publishers’ claims and will defend our position vigorously in court,” an Anthropic spokesperson said in an email to TechCrunch.
This is not the first time that Anthropic has faced a lawsuit to intellectual property.

In a case filed in January, the authors accused these companies of using copyrighted works to train products like Cloud.
