Manchester United manager Michael Carrick praised his side's resilience and unity after they fought back from an early blow to register an emphatic 5-2 Premier League win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. Inspired by a superb Bruno Fernandes hat-trick, the team displayed exactly the winning mindset their head coach had called for after last week's defeat.

Bouncing back from defeat

Speaking after the commanding victory over Ipswich, Carrick commended the manner in which Manchester United responded following their opening-weekend loss at Hull. According to the Guardian, the manager was highly pleased with the reaction produced by his players after they went behind to an early goal from Leif Davis.

Fernandes sparked the turnaround with his hat-trick, while a Jacob Greaves own goal and a late effort from Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring for the home side. Chuka Akpom netted a late consolation for the visitors, but it did little to change the mood at Old Trafford. Carrick stressed how important it was to come through adversity so early in the season.

Relying on strong mentality

Carrick was especially satisfied with the mental response shown by his squad. The former midfielder explained that handling difficult periods is vital for any team that wants to be successful. "We spoke before about trying to overcome last week, and then we took a mini setback if you like, going a goal behind," Carrick said.

"But showing stubbornness, belief, confidence, and togetherness the boys showed at that stage – in a small part, because we’re so early in the season – I think that was really pleasing for me. The way they bounced back, that’s probably the biggest thing to take. There’s a lot of highlights, but that mentality was what we really relied on today."

Immense Mainoo impact

While the collective mentality helped secure the points, Carrick also made a point of highlighting the exceptional individual display of Kobbie Mainoo. Making his first start of the season after a managed return from World Cup duty, Mainoo dictated the tempo superbly.

Carrick said: "To put in that performance today shows what Kobbie can do. We’re fortunate enough to have a really good midfield unit, and we can call upon different players at different times. I was really happy with the way he played today." Carrick added in his press conference: "I understand Bruno will get a lot of credit today, and he deserves that as well, but I thought Kobbie was immense in the middle of the pitch for us and underpinned the performance of the team."

What next for United?

Manchester United will aim to carry this statement result into their forthcoming Premier League matches. With Marcus Rashford back in the starting XI and Mainoo showing his fitness, Carrick has plenty of options available in attack and midfield. United now need to sustain this aggressive momentum and make sure the squad reproduces the same winning mentality in the games ahead.
