Battery-as-a-Service or BaaS is quickly becoming popular in India as more people are now planning to buy electric cars. For those who may not be aware, with BaaS, instead of paying for the expensive battery pack upfront. Buyers can pay a lower amount for the car and then pay a fixed or per-kilometre battery charge. This massively reduces the initial purchase price and the overall ownership cost depends on how much the owner drives. Now if this sounds good to you, here is the list of 7 cars that you can buy with BaaS.

First off let’s start with the Kia Syros EV. The recently launched electric sub-compact SUV from Kia with the BaaS scheme starts at Rs 7.99 lakh for the 42 kWh version. And if one wants to buy it without BaaS it is priced at Rs 13.49 lakh for the outright purchase. This means buyers can save around Rs 5.50 lakh on the initial purchase price.

The battery subscription starts at Rs 3.30 per km for the 42 kWh battery. And the larger 51.4 kWh version has a higher Rs 3.80 per km charge. Kia uses a dual-loan structure where the vehicle and battery are treated as separate financial assets.

The newly launched MG Tomahawk EV is another major addition to the BaaS lineup in India. The electric SUV comes with a 69.2 kWh battery and offers a claimed range of 517 km. Its standard price starts at Rs 19.49 lakh. However the BaaS version starts at Rs 13.99 lakh. The battery subscription is priced at Rs 4.90 per km.

This results in an upfront saving of around Rs 6.01 lakh. The EV produces 204 PS and 310 Nm and supports 90kW DC fast charging. The Tomahawk EV is available with both 5-seater and 7-seater layouts.

The MG Tomahawk is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which makes it one of the most interesting BaaS offerings in India. The PHEV gets a 20.5 kWh battery combined with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. It costs Rs 25.69 lakh without BaaS. However, the BaaS version starts at Rs 21.79 lakh.

The battery rental fee is Rs 3.20 per km and overall it helps in saving around Rs 3.91 lakh. The PHEV can travel more than 115 km on electric power and offers a combined range of over 1,100 km.

Mahindra recently launched the BE 6 Sporteq in India and has also introduced its BaaS financing structure. The BE 6 Sporteq starts at Rs 11.45 lakh under the BaaS scheme, but without it, it starts at Rs 19.45 lakh and goes up to Rs 26.95 lakh. This means buyers get an upfront saving of around Rs 8 lakh.

However, Mahindra’s system is different from a conventional battery rental model. The buyer legally owns the battery from day one and pays for it through a separate fixed battery EMI. The BE 6 is available with 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh battery options and the top version offers up to 682 km of claimed range. It also gets a three-screen digital cockpit, TEQ_Talk with Google Gemini AI and an 11.2kW AC charging option.

Recently Mahindra Automotive also launched the XEV 9S with a new BaaS pricing structure. Its price now starts at Rs 12.65 lakh under BaaS, meanwhile the standard price starts at Rs 20.65 lakh. This represents an upfront saving of around Rs 8 lakh. The effective battery cost is calculated at around Rs 3.75 per km based on Mahindra’s fixed EMI structure.

The XEV 9S is built on the INGLO platform and is offered with multiple battery options. It has quickly become very popular amongst buyers who are looking for a larger 7-seater and more premium electric SUV.

The XEV 9e is the third Mahindra model under the BaaS programme. Its BaaS price starts at Rs 13.90 lakh, compared to Rs 21.90 lakh for the outright purchase price. Once again, buyers save around Rs 8 lakh upfront. The battery cost has been structured through a separate fixed EMI.

Mahindra also uses a benchmark figure of Rs 3.75 per km for this battery financing. The XEV 9e has been positioned as a premium coupe electric SUV and uses the same INGLO architecture as the BE 6 and XEV 9S.

The Hyundai Creta Electric is another popular electric SUV which comes with BaaS options. Under the scheme, it starts at Rs 10.99 lakh compared to Rs 18.03 lakh for the standard pricing. This gives buyers an upfront saving of Rs 7.04 lakh. As for the battery subscription fee it is Rs 3.90 per km.

The Creta Electric is available with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery options and the larger battery offers up to 510 km of claimed range. It also gets features such as Level 2 ADAS, V2L, i-Pedal and a 7.4kW home charger. Hyundai also offers a 60% assured buyback after three years or 45,000 km, whichever comes first.
