Dengue Diet: At present, along with H1N1, dengue is also spreading in the national capital. In this situation the fever is reaching 102 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. On hearing the name of dengue, the first thing that comes to mind is the concern about platelets. In such a situation, many home remedies are heard on social media and from nearby people – especially the claim that platelets increase rapidly by drinking papaya leaf juice. But, is this really a cure for dengue? What should a patient eat during dengue and what things should he stay away from? What is most important in dengue? Noida’s people are telling about this Integrated Doctor Dr. Sanjay Varshney-
Dr. Sanjay says that, in fact, the most important thing in dengue is to avoid deficiency of water and electrolytes in the body and to remain under the supervision of the doctor. Papaya leaves can be effective to some extent in the initial condition of dengue. But, doctor’s advice and examination is very important.
Does papaya leaf juice increase platelets?
Some small studies on papaya leaf extract have shown the possibility of increasing platelet count, but this does not prove that home-made papaya leaf juice is a cure for dengue or that drinking it will increase platelets. Even in many researches, there is not enough evidence regarding its benefits. Therefore, it is not right to depend only on papaya leaf juice to increase platelets.
Doctors say that, in reality, the severity of the disease in dengue is not assessed only by looking at the platelet count. The doctor looks at the symptoms, blood test and overall condition of the patient.
Adequate fluid is most important in dengue.
In dengue, fever, vomiting or less food and drink can cause deficiency of water and electrolytes in the body. According to WHO advice, the patient should be given adequate amount of fluids. ORS, electrolyte drinks, milk and suitable fruit juices can be taken with water. If the patient is feeling hungry then light and easily digestible food can be given. Things like khichdi, porridge, moong dal, soup, curd-rice can help in providing energy and nutrition to the body.
Include fruits and vegetables in your diet
A balanced diet is important during dengue. Seasonal fruits, vegetables, pulses and adequate protein can be part of the diet. Eating too much fried, spicy or heavy food can increase digestive problems, especially when the patient is experiencing nausea or vomiting.
What things should be avoided during dengue?
In dengue, Aspirin, Ibuprofen or other NSAID painkillers should not be taken without doctor’s advice, as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Paracetamol is used for fever or pain as per doctor’s advice. Apart from this, it is better to stay away from alcohol and things that dehydrate the body. Consult a doctor before taking any herbal remedy or supplement.
Don’t panic if platelets are low, monitoring is necessary
Falling platelets can be common in dengue, but instead of panicking just by seeing low platelets, doctor’s advice and constant monitoring is necessary. In the severe stage of dengue, platelets may drop rapidly and other warning signs may also appear.
If you see these symptoms, go to the hospital immediately
Signs like severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums or nose, vomiting blood or black stools, extreme weakness, restlessness, trouble breathing or cold skin can indicate severe dengue. In such a situation, do not rely on home remedies at all and seek medical help immediately.
