Wavre. Germany once again proved its supremacy in the big match and retained the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup title.
Germany defeated Spain 1-0 in the final played on Sunday at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium. Michel Struthoff’s goal in the last moments of the third quarter decided the title match.
With this victory, Germany increased its number of titles in the Men’s Hockey World Cup to four and equaled the record of becoming world champion for the most number of times.
Spain was appearing in the World Cup final for the first time and had greater control of the ball for most of the match. The Spanish team also created several chances to score, but Germany’s strong defense and the excellent performance of goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg foiled all its attempts.
In the third quarter, Spain applied continuous pressure and also won three penalty corners, but could not convert them into goals. Meanwhile, Germany took advantage of a rare counter-attack.
Hannes Müller sent the ball into the circle, where Struthoff capitalized on the opportunity by beating goalkeeper Luis Calzado and putting the ball in the goal.
In the last quarter, Spain tried with all its might to equalize. In the last minutes, after removing the goalkeeper, an extra player was also fielded, but Germany’s strong defense was not broken.
