Anthropic Faces New Copyright Lawsuit: Well-known artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic has once again been embroiled in a major legal dispute. World famous music companies Sony Music Publishing (Sony Music Publishing) and Warner Chappell Music (Warner Chappell Music) have filed a case against Anthropic in the US court. The music companies allege that Anthropic illegally used thousands of copyrighted songs and their lyrics without permission to train its AI models. If the court rules in favor of the music companies, Anthropic could face billions of dollars in financial losses.

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell filed the complaint in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The music companies have claimed that Anthropic used their music works without permission to train their AI models. This legal claim includes thousands of copyrighted works. It is worth mentioning that this legal suit, filed in August 2026, has increased the legal pressure on Anthropic from all sides.

Compensation of $150,000 per copyright

Music companies have taken a tougher stance, demanding hefty damages of up to $150,000 for each infringement of a copyrighted composition. In addition, separate damages of $25,000 are sought for each instance where copyright identifying information was removed. Anthropic has previously agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in copyright disputes with authors and publishers.

Tricking BitTorrent and Pirated Sites

The new lawsuit alleges Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei (Dario Amodei) and Benjamin Mann have been named as individual defendants. It is alleged that Benjamin Mann downloaded more than 5 million pirated books through BitTorrent, while company employees retrieved more than 2 million books from pirated libraries. In addition, it is also claimed that data from licensed sites like Musixmatch and LyricFind has been obtained illegally to obtain lyrics.
