Kathmandu, 31 August 2026: The destroyer that has arrived in Nepal has created an outcry. According to the latest figures released by Nepal's National Disaster Authority, so far 903 people have been confirmed dead due to floods and disasters in the country, while 4,247 people are still missing. So far, more than 10,000 people have been shifted to safe places during relief and rescue operations, while 267 people have been injured. On the other hand, neighboring country China has reported 16 deaths and more than 500 people missing in this disaster.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 933 hydropower project workers are feared trapped inside the tunnels of various hydropower projects after the devastating floods in Nepal. A huge effort is being taken to evacuate all these people. An important suspension bridge in Gorkha district of Gandaki region was damaged due to sudden flood in Trishuli river in the central part of Nepal. This bridge used to connect Ghyaal Chowk of Gandaki Rural Municipality-8 with Charondi near Prithvi Highway. Approximately 400 families of Ward No. 7 and 8 of Gandaki Rural Municipality have lost their connection with the Prithvi Highway due to the bridge being washed away in the flow of this deadly flood that lasted for approximately three hours.

• Danger of flood for the second time, rescue operation challenging

Nepalese officials have warned that the accumulation of scum and debris in the Bhotekoshi River has created a natural dam like a lake. If this natural barrier is broken, there may be a risk of serious flooding again. China has also raised alarm bells regarding a similar natural lake in Tibet. This possible second disaster has posed major challenges to the ongoing relief and rescue operations.

To respond to this great disaster, massive rescue operations are being carried out in Nepal. More than 13,000 security personnel of Nepali Army, Armed Police Forces and Nepal Police are deployed. Help of helicopters is being taken to rescue the trapped civilians and to deliver food, medicines and essential relief materials. Apart from government helicopters, aid is also being provided to the affected areas through private helicopters and dozens of charter flights.
