Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has once again shut down the outside noise, and this time he has made his impact in first-class cricket.

Before the start of the Duleep Trophy, there were questions about Sooryavanshi’s technique, temperament and ability to succeed in the longer format. We had already seen what he could do in T20 and 50-over cricket, but red-ball cricket was considered a different test altogether.

The question was simple: can a 15-year-old batter, whose natural instinct is to attack, adjust his game to multi-day cricket?

With a brilliant 92 off 81 balls against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final, Sooryavanshi has given a strong answer.

Whenever we have watched Sooryavanshi in T20 cricket, his first instinct has been to attack. He wants to put pressure on the bowler, find boundaries and keep the game moving.

That approach suits T20 cricket. However, red-ball cricket demands much more than just attacking ability.

It requires patience, temperament, composure and, most importantly, the ability to understand when to attack and when to respect the conditions and the bowler.

That was why the Duleep Trophy was an important test for Sooryavanshi.

There were doubts over whether his aggressive approach would work in first-class cricket. Some believed his technique could be exposed when bowlers were given more time to work him out.

But whenever a new challenge has been thrown at Sooryavanshi, he has shown that he knows how to respond.

92 Off 81 Balls Against Central Zone

In the Duleep Trophy semi-final between East Zone and Central Zone in Bengaluru, Sooryavanshi played an eye-catching knock of 92 from 81 deliveries.

He reached his half-century in only 42 balls and eventually fell just eight runs short of what would have been a memorable century.

More importantly, this was not simply another T20-style assault.

Sooryavanshi showed that he could take his aggressive game into first-class cricket while still handling the different challenges that come with the longer format.

The innings also created history. At 15 years and 175 days, he became the youngest batter to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy.

For a player whose red-ball temperament had been questioned, this was a strong statement.

Sooryavanshi Has Already Dominated White-Ball Cricket

His ability in white-ball cricket was never really in doubt.

We saw what Sooryavanshi did during India’s title-winning campaign at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026.

In the final against England, he produced a remarkable 175 off just 80 balls. His innings included 15 fours and 15 sixes and helped India post 411/9 before winning the final by 100 runs.

That performance showed his ability to handle pressure on one of the biggest stages of junior cricket.

He followed it with another destructive performance in the A-Team Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A.

Sooryavanshi smashed 94 from just 29 balls as India A defeated Sri Lanka A by 66 runs. He reached his fifty in only 11 deliveries during that innings.

So the 50-over format was already ticked.

IPL 2026 Was Another Extraordinary Season

Then there is T20 cricket, where everyone already knows how dangerous Sooryavanshi can be.

His IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals was extraordinary.

He finished the tournament with 776 runs from 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30, winning the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award.

But some of his best performances came when the pressure was at its highest.

In the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sooryavanshi smashed 97 off just 29 balls.

He then followed it with 96 off 47 balls against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

Rajasthan Royals eventually lost that match as Shubman Gill’s 104 helped Gujarat Titans chase down 215, but Sooryavanshi had once again shown his ability to perform in a high-pressure knockout game.

Throughout IPL 2026, he faced experienced international bowlers and continued playing with the same confidence that has made him one of the most exciting young batters in Indian cricket.

There was hardly any doubt about his T20 capabilities after that season.

The bigger question was always red-ball cricket.

Duleep Trophy 92 Shows Another Side of Sooryavanshi

That is why this Duleep Trophy innings carries importance beyond the 92 runs.

Sooryavanshi has shown that his natural aggression does not necessarily have to become a weakness in first-class cricket.

Of course, one innings cannot decide how successful a player will become in the longer format. First-class cricket will continue to test his technique, patience and ability to adjust against different bowling attacks and conditions.

But this knock is certainly an encouraging sign.

He had already scored a first-class fifty before the Duleep Trophy, making 93 off 67 balls for Bihar against Meghalaya in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy Plate competition. The 92 against Central Zone has now come on a much bigger domestic stage.

At just 15, there is still plenty for Sooryavanshi to learn. However, what stands out is the way he continues to respond whenever a new challenge comes his way.

T20 cricket? He has already shown what he can do.

50-over cricket? A 175 in the U19 World Cup final and 94 in the A-Team Tri-Series final tell their own story.

First-class cricket? His 92 in the Duleep Trophy semi-final has now provided another strong answer.

It is still very early to predict how far Sooryavanshi will go in red-ball cricket, and Test cricket will be an even bigger challenge if that opportunity arrives in the future.

But the 15-year-old is showing that he does not want to be labelled as just a T20 hitter.

With his Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Duleep Trophy performance, he has shown that there could be much more to his batting than pure aggression.

The outside noise will continue. So will the challenges.

So far, Sooryavanshi has preferred to answer them with his bat.
