Manchester United great Wayne Rooney has expressed his frustration with Michael Carrick after the Red Devils manager chose not to give highly-rated youngster Shea Lacey any Premier League minutes. Even though United secured a comfortable 5-2 win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, Rooney felt the club missed an important chance to help develop its next generation.

Early scare before five-star recovery

Manchester United responded strongly after their surprise 2-0 defeat to Hull City by registering an emphatic 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. The evening began in worrying fashion when Leif Davis put the newly promoted visitors ahead, sparking fears that another disappointing result could be on the cards.

But a superb hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes led a ruthless comeback. An own goal by Jacob Greaves and a late strike from Bryan Mbeumo completed the dominant win, making Chuba Akpom’s stoppage-time goal nothing more than a consolation.

With the contest effectively under control in the second half, Carrick turned to his bench. The United boss brought on experienced first-team options Benjamin Sesko, Andrey Santos and Noussair Mazraoui, choosing to focus on giving senior players match sharpness rather than introducing academy prospects.

Rooney rues missing Lacey cameo

Speaking to The United Stand, Rooney said he was disappointed that teenage winger Lacey remained unused on the bench. The former United striker believed the scoreline offered the perfect setting to hand the youngster a chance.

“What I would liked to have seen, which I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t see, was Shea Lacey come on when the game was done,” Rooney said. “For young players when the game is over it’s an opportunity for them to go and get some minutes and go and show what they can do at that level.”

Rooney also compared the situation to Marcus Rashford’s memorable breakthrough in similar circumstances, pointing out how even a short appearance can be the start of a major career.

“I would’ve liked to see Shea Lacey come on just to get a glimpse of what we’ve seen in pre-season,” he added. “It’s little moments like that where you don’t get many times during the season where you’re able to do that. So that was a little bit of a missed opportunity.”

Carrick hails crucial team mentality

In spite of Rooney’s criticism, Carrick’s main feeling after the game was relief following a difficult week. The head coach praised his players for their mental strength after going behind early against Ipswich, especially in the wake of the bruising defeat at Hull.

“We spoke before about trying to overcome last week, and then we took a mini setback if you like, going a goal behind,” Carrick told the press. “But showing stubbornness, belief, confidence, and togetherness the boys showed at that stage... I think that was really pleasing for me.”

The team effort was built around Kobbie Mainoo, who controlled the midfield on his first start of the season. Carrick was quick to praise the returning international, saying that although Fernandes would grab the headlines, Mainoo was “immense” and vital to supporting the overall performance.
