Everything between Sahir and Amrita Pritam started in the year 1944, when already married Amrita met the then emerging poet and lyricist Sahir for the first time. According to a report by Firstpost, they met at a Mushaira organized in a village located between Lahore and Delhi. It is said that just like in the movies, their love blossomed in a moment. Amrita’s beauty, her command over words and Sahir’s passion and idealism played an important role in bringing the two closer.

Amrita was crazy about Sahir

It is believed that Amrita was deeply in love with Sahir and wanted to get out of her unhappy marriage, but Sahir never took this relationship seriously. In her biography ‘Raseedi Ticket’, Amrita Pritam has mentioned the moments she spent with Sahir, when he used to come to her house in Lahore. After Sahir left, Amrita would keep the remaining cigarette butts that he had smoked and would put them to her lips and feel Sahir. Gradually this habit led him to addiction to cigarettes, which remained with him throughout his life.

After this, the responsibility of filling the void in Amrita’s life fell on painter Imroz, but this happened much later. Amrita eventually ended her marriage and is said to have lived with Imroz for four decades, but never married him. It is said that when Imroz used to take Amrita Pritam on a scooter, Amrita Pritam used to write Sahir’s name on her back. Imroz knew this, but never said it because he also respected Sahir a lot.
