Tamil Nadu Congress appears to be upset as its ally, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), continues to project party chief Vijay Joseph as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S Rajesh Kumar has warned that the Congress ministers in the Vijay's Cabinet will resign if TVK does not back Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
"If Mr. Rahul Gandhi [Congress leader] is not accepted (by the TVK) as the Prime Minister candidate of the 2029 Parliamentary election, both the Congress Ministers in the Tamil Nadu Government will immediately resign their posts and pull out from the Cabinet," The Hindu quoted Kumar as saying at a party meeting in Marthandam on Sunday (August 30) night.
Kumar said the Congress was steadily gaining popularity among people from all sections of society, crediting Gandhi's sustained campaign against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
He also claimed that Gandhi had emerged as the preferred Prime Ministerial candidate among voters across the country as well as within the Congress.
"If the TVK takes a contradictory stand and refuses to accept Gandhi as its Prime Ministerial candidate, the two Congress Ministers in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet will immediately resign from their posts," Kumar said, drawing loud applause from party cadres.
His remarks come at a time when a recent survey placed Vijay third among the preferred choices for the next Prime Minister of India, behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi.
According to the India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation (MOTN) poll, Modi was the preferred choice of 48.7% of respondents, followed by Rahul Gandhi at 27.1% and Vijay at 9.2%.
Vijay, who founded TVK in 2024, has emerged as a prominent political figure in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
His party worked have started projecting him as the ideal candidate to defeat Prime Minister Modi whose party BJP has won three general elections in a row.
