Silver jewelery is very much liked in Indian homes. Jewelery like anklets, toe rings, chains, rings and bangles look very beautiful after wearing them. But after some time, a black layer starts accumulating on them and the shine of the jewelery reduces. Many people go to goldsmiths to get such jewelery cleaned, whereas an easy way to clean normal tarnish can be tried at home also.

For this you will need aluminum foil, baking soda, salt and hot water. This method can especially help in loosening the common black layer or tarnish on the surface.

How to shine silver with aluminum foil

First of all, take a deep and strong vessel and spread aluminum foil inside it. Place the shiny side of the foil upwards. Now place the silver jewelery to be cleaned on top of the foil. Try to ensure that the jewelery has direct contact with the foil. Now put about 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt on the jewellery. After this, add so much hot water that the jewelery is completely immersed in water.

Leave it for about 5 to 10 minutes. During this time, the chemical process between aluminum, baking soda, salt and hot water can help in removing the tarnish present on the surface of the silver. After the time is over, carefully take out the jewellery. Wash them thoroughly with clean water and then gently wipe them dry with a soft cloth.

Why does silver turn black?

Blackening of silver jewelery usually occurs due to reaction with sulfur compounds present in the air. Due to this, a dark layer like silver sulphide can form on the surface of silver, which is called tarnish. Exposure to moisture, sweat, cosmetics and some household chemicals can also affect the shine of jewellery. This is the reason why silver anklets and rings start appearing black if used for a long time or not stored properly.

Do not try this method on these ornaments

It is not appropriate to use this method on all types of silver jewellery. If the jewelery contains pearls, opals, soft or sensitive gemstones, artificial stones, delicate designs or other metal decorations, it is better to seek expert advice before cleaning with hot water and baking soda. This method can alter the shine or finish even on very old, antique or oxidized silver jewellery. Professional cleaning can be a better option for such jewellery.

After cleaning the jewellery, keep it completely dry. Keeping silver away from moisture for long periods of time and storing it in an airtight pouch or box can also help reduce tarnish.
