The Indian Navy on Wednesday commissioned its second Salvage-class Diving Support Vessel (DSV) 'Nipun' into its fleet at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. Its inclusion will significantly increase the Navy's deep sea diving and underwater support capabilities. Today a new chapter has started in the journey from design to commissioning of the ship.
Designed and built at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, 'Nipun' is a significant milestone in India's efforts to achieve self-reliance in defense shipbuilding. After completing an extensive program of fitting out and trials, the ship was handed over to the Indian Navy on 30 July. This specially designed vessel has been built to support a variety of diving and underwater missions. The ship is equipped with modern diving systems and underwater intervention capabilities to provide continuous support to divers operating in difficult sea conditions. This will also increase the Navy's ability to help in submarine rescue operations.
The ship is equipped with modern systems for navigation, platform management and precise positioning, as well as specialized facilities for diving, underwater intervention and medical support. With these capabilities, Nipun can serve as an integrated platform for difficult underwater operations. The commissioning of 'Nipun' will further strengthen the Navy's capability to conduct specialized diving and underwater missions in the Indian waters. The induction of this indigenous platform also reflects the growing capability of the country's shipbuilding ecosystem to build technologically advanced and niche ships to meet the operational requirements of the Navy.
Naval Captain Vivek Madhwal said the ship's markings reflect the ship's key role as a diving support vessel and the courage, endurance and professional skill required in deep sea diving. Modern diving helmet showcases the ship's advanced diving systems and life-saving capabilities. This will enable divers to work safely and effectively in deep water. The whale and the diving helmet combine to represent the Adept, a platform dedicated to taking divers into deep water, keeping them there, and bringing them back safely.
