Washington: The fragile calm between the United States and Iran has been shattered after a fresh exchange of attacks, with US President Donald Trump warning Tehran of a strong military response following strikes on American bases in Jordan.

Trump said the US would respond to Iran's attack, sending a clear warning that the conflict could once again move from economic pressure and sanctions to direct military confrontation.

Speaking to Fox NewMedia, Trump said the US would take action against Iran after Iranian forces launched missiles at American military positions in Jordan.

“We're going to hit them hard,” Trump was quoted as saying, adding that “there will be a response.”

The warning comes after Iran retaliated against US strikes on Iranian military facilities on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, Trump claimed that American air defense systems intercepted almost all Iranian missiles fired toward US bases.
