A PAN card is an important document for taxpayers and is required for several tax, banking and financial transactions. If your name, address or mobile number linked to your PAN records is incorrect or outdated, you can request an update or correction.

From April 1, 2026, new PAN forms have been introduced under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. For individual PAN holders, PAN CR-01 is the prescribed form for changes or corrections in PAN data.

How to correct PAN card details online?

Existing PAN holders can apply for changes or corrections in their PAN data through the online PAN services provided by authorised service providers such as Protean eGov and UTIITSL. The Income Tax Department says PAN correction can also be submitted through offline mode.

For an individual, the current correction form is PAN CR-01. The process can be used to request changes to applicable PAN details, including name, date of birth, address and contact details.

To apply online:

  • Visit the PAN service portal of Protean eGov or UTIITSL.
  • Select the option for Change/Correction in PAN Data.
  • Enter your PAN and other required details.
  • Select the relevant fields for which a correction is required.
  • Enter the updated information carefully.
  • Submit the required supporting documents, wherever applicable.
  • Pay the applicable fee shown during the application process.
  • Submit the application and keep the acknowledgement details safely for future reference.

In the Protean online process, a token number is generated before the form is filled and is also sent to the email ID provided during registration. Applicants should keep this number safely if they need to resume the application.

How to change name, address and mobile number on PAN card?

The PAN correction process allows applicants to update applicable personal and contact details. The relevant fields should be selected and the correct information should be entered carefully.

For a name correction, select the applicable name field and provide the details exactly as required. Supporting documents may be required depending on the nature of the change.

For an address update, provide the complete and correct address in the applicable section. The address entered should be supported by the required documents wherever applicable.

For a mobile number update, provide the current mobile number and other required contact details in the relevant section of the application. Applicants should make sure that the contact information is entered correctly because it can be used for communication and application- updates.

Can you update your PAN address for free?

Eligible PAN holders can use the Aadhaar-based PAN update facility available through the Income Tax Department’s e-Filing system for updating PAN details as per Aadhaar e-KYC. The Income Tax Department’s current guidance provides an option to update PAN details through Aadhaar-based authentication.

Applicants should check the official portal to determine whether their particular update is eligible for the Aadhaar-based facility before using the regular PAN correction process.

For changes that require supporting documents or are not covered by the Aadhaar-based facility, applicants may need to use the prescribed PAN Change/Correction process.

Which documents are required for PAN correction?

The documents required depend on the type of correction being requested.

Applicants may be required to provide documents supporting their identity, address, date of birth or the specific change being requested. The exact requirements should be checked in the applicable PAN correction guidelines before submitting the application.

For a name change or correction, additional documentary proof may be required depending on the reason for the change. Applicants should therefore make sure that the information entered in the application matches the supporting documents.

It is important to submit clear and valid documents in the format specified by the PAN service provider to avoid delays or rejection of the request.

What is the PAN correction fee?

The applicable fee depends on the type of PAN service, application mode, communication address and whether a physical PAN card is required.

Applicants should check the fee displayed on the official Protean or UTIITSL portal at the time of submitting the correction request rather than relying on an old fixed fee quoted online.

The Rs 50 fee for an Indian address and Rs 959 for a foreign address mentioned in some older PAN articles relates to the reprint of a PAN card when no change in PAN data is required through Protean’s specific reprint facility. It should not be presented as a universal PAN correction fee.

When will the updated PAN card arrive?

The processing and delivery time can vary depending on the application, document verification and other processing requirements. Therefore, applicants should not assume a fixed delivery period such as 15 or 20 working days.

After submitting the correction request, keep the acknowledgement or application details safely. These details can be used to track the status of the PAN application through the relevant PAN service provider. Protean provides an online facility to track PAN application status using the required application details.

If the correction request is successfully processed, a new PAN card bearing the same PAN number with the updated details can be issued.

Do you need a new PAN number after changing details?

No. You do not need to apply for a new PAN number simply because you want to correct or update details on your existing PAN.

The PAN Change/Correction process is specifically meant for applicants who already have a PAN and want to make changes to their PAN data. Protean states that a new PAN card bearing the same PAN with updated details is issued after a successful correction request.

Therefore, if your name, address or other PAN details need correction, use the prescribed PAN Change/Correction process instead of applying for another PAN.
