Nowadays, UPI payments typically require a smartphone and an internet connection. However, millions of people in the country still use feature phones that have limited or no internet access. PhonePe has launched a new initiative for such users.

Fintech company PhonePe has launched UPI 123Pay. According to the company, this allows feature phone users to conduct UPI transactions without an internet connection. This feature can be particularly useful in areas with weak internet connectivity.

**Benefiting over 200 million feature phone users**
PhonePe claims to be the first major third-party application provider to bring UPI payment capabilities to the country's more than 200 million feature phone users.

The company has developed this service using its own technology. Its objective is to integrate people who do not use smartphones or have constant internet access into the digital payment ecosystem.

**Payments via SMS technology**
A key feature of UPI 123Pay is its SMS-based architecture. This means there is no need to rely on mobile internet at all times to complete transactions.

According to PhonePe, the system is designed to ensure reliable transactions even in areas with poor network coverage. It can prove especially useful in locations where only limited 2G connectivity is available.

**Partnerships with Nokia, HMD, Lava, and Itel**
To reach the maximum number of feature phone users, PhonePe has partnered with several handset manufacturers, including Nokia, HMD, Lava International, and Itel Mobile.

According to the company, the UPI 123Pay service will come pre-installed on select devices from these manufacturers, potentially reducing the need for users to go through complex setup processes.

**Effort to expand digital payments to more people**
While UPI has rapidly boosted digital payments in India, internet-based payment services still rely heavily on smartphones and connectivity. PhonePe's new initiative aims to bridge this gap.
