IPL 2027: The big discussion has started again about the Impact Player Rule in IPL. Ever since the introduction of this rule in 2023, the debate has continued in cricket circles. Now the Indian Cricket Board is on the way to review the rule. Already 10 franchises of IPL have been asked to submit their opinion or report on this rule.

BCCI asked for reports from 10 teams

According to a Cricbuzz report, all IPL teams are expected to submit their report on the impact player rule by Monday, August 31. As a result, it is clear that the Board is reviewing this rule with considerable importance.

A few months ago, BCCI secretary Debjit Saikia also said that impact player rules will be reconsidered. This time direct feedback from franchisees has fueled speculation about the rule’s future.

In 2026, the controversy increased

Ever since the introduction of the impact player rule, questions have been raised about its impact on bowlers. The debate intensified in IPL 2026. More than 200 runs have been scored in more matches this season than ever before. As a result, the question whether this rule is giving extra benefits to the batters has come up again.

According to many cricket experts, teams are able to play more aggressive cricket due to the additional batting options. On the other hand, the match conditions are becoming more difficult for the bowlers.

Opposition from several star cricketers

Several Indian stars have publicly objected to the Impact Player rule. Cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill have opposed this rule at various times.

Their main point is that the opportunity to use an extra batsman or bowler changes the balance of the team and the normal strategy of cricket. It is believed to have a negative impact on bowlers in particular.

Devjit Shaikia’s argument is different

However, BCCI secretary Debjit Saikia has argued in favor of the impact player rule in the past. According to him, because of this rule, not only the high-scoring matches but also the low-run matches have created the interest of the spectators. Besides, the bowlers are also getting a chance to take wickets.

That is, there is absolutely no consensus on this rule even within the board. However, the decision to seek the opinion of the franchises indicates that the BCCI wants to review the matter in detail.

The rules came into effect in 2023

The impact player rule was introduced in IPL for the first time in 2023. Each team has to submit a list of five substitute cricketers before the toss. One of those five can be fielded as an impact player during the match.

An impact player can be used after the fall of a wicket, the end of an over or the end of an innings. A cricketer who is replaced by an impact player cannot return to the match.

Playing conditions from the PMOA—discussing multiple issues

Not only the impact player rule, BCCI is also thinking about PMOA or Players and Match Officials Area, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions.

But the impact player rule may be the most important of these. The board indicated last year that the rule would remain in place for at least one more season. But this time the situation has taken a new turn as the report is sought from the franchisees.
