Messi has formally confirmed his retirement from the Argentina national team at 39. The iconic skipper announced the news in an emotional post that included a handwritten notebook message in Spanish. He bows out as the highest-scoring male player in South American international football and Argentina’s all-time leader for both goals and appearances.

He scored 125 goals in 207 caps during a remarkable international career that featured six World Cup tournaments. The decision brings the curtain down on a historic era for La Albiceleste. Father’s death seals emotional decision

Messi disclosed that he first wrote his farewell message on 21 July, two days after the 2026 World Cup final. But the death of his father, Jorge Messi, aged 68, on 8 August in Rosario strengthened his resolve.

“I wrote these words on July 21st, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before,” he wrote.

“It was a decision that hurt - and still hurts deep down - but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all - not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.

“I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you - alongside my team-mates - moments we once only dreamed of. It was an incredible experience to live this with you all. I love you! Thank you, God, for making me Argentine.”

Ending drought to winning it all

Messi’s journey with Argentina was marked by drama and perseverance before it ended in complete international glory. He had previously announced his retirement from international football in 2016 after losing three straight major finals, but he reversed that decision soon afterwards.

That return opened the door to silverware, with Messi playing a vital role in ending Argentina’s 28-year trophy drought by winning the 2021 Copa America. He then helped retain the title in 2024.
