New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Tuesday canceled all the FIRs to the Cockroach Janata Party movement. The Supreme Court used the powers given in Article 142 of the Constitution for this decision.

However, the government said that 2,873 people with criminal records had arrived during the protest. The case will continue against those people who have assaulted or caused damage to property during that period. Before the hearing, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) withdrew the march of 5 September. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the government is committed to fulfilling all three promises made to CJP leaders after the student protests.
Court said- Special powers are used so that both the parties agree to the agreement
During the hearing, the court said that the decision to cancel the FIR has been taken only after looking at the specific facts and circumstances of this case, hence it will not be considered as an example and binding decision for other cases. The court also said that its special power under Article 142 of the Constitution is being used on the condition that both the parties will fully abide by the agreement reached before the court.
The government had filed an interim application on Monday

On August 31, the government had filed a petition with the Delhi Police to cancel the FIR lodged against the students protesting against the NEET paper leak. This was an interim application. An application given in the court for any immediate or temporary relief while the main case/petition is being heard is called interim application.
The government had said in the application given on Monday that as per the decision of July 25, Delhi Police does not want to pursue 13 FIRs to the demonstrations of Cockroach Janata Party.
There was a clash between protesters and security personnel on July 20.
On July 20, there was a clash between protesters and security personnel during the march led by CJP in Delhi. Security personnel used lathicharge and tear gas to stop the crowd moving towards Parliament. After this the students' movement spread to many cities. Their main demand was the resignation of the then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The movement started from Jantar Mantar on 20 June. The movement was ended on July 25 after Pradhan's resignation and the government accepting other demands of CJP.
