Shakti Sharma creates history as first (non-medical) woman two-star officer in defense services

New Delhi, September 1, 2026 – woman two-star officer in the defense services Indian Air Force In a historic landmark, Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has become the first woman officer (non-medical) to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal (or equivalent) in the Indian Defense Forces. Today, on 01 September 2026, he took over as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters.

AVM Shakti Sharma, who was commissioned in the Education Branch of the IAF on June 18, 1994, will benefit greatly from his experience in his new role. His diverse experience includes various postings in training institutes, field stations, command headquarters and air headquarters. During his career he has led key institutional initiatives including the establishment of IAF Chair of Excellence at ILT Kanpur and Pune University to advance academic and strategic defense cooperation. She also created history by becoming the first woman officer from the tri-services to command a Sainik School by serving as the Principal of the Sainik School in Kapurthala.
