Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra trailer is finally out, offering a first glimpse of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in a gripping crime drama centred on law and justice. Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, a police officer who believes in following due process, while Prithviraj’s DCP Raman Kumar appears willing to take matters into his own hands. Set against an encounter investigation, the trailer quickly establishes a tense clash between two cops with opposing ideas of justice. With Talvar filmmaker Meghna Gulzar returning to the crime genre, Daayra raises uncomfortable questions about morality, accountability and whether justice can ever be separated from the law.

After Talvar,  returns to the crime genre with Daayra, but the trailer suggests that this is not simply another investigation-driven story. At the centre is an encounter involving juvenile accused, which sets off a chain of questions about police authority, accountability and the limits of the law. Rather than revealing too much about the case, the trailer uses the conflict between two officers to establish a morally complicated world where there are no straightforward answers. Meghna appears to be more interested in examining what happens when personal ideas of justice begin to clash with institutional rules, making the investigation itself a test of conscience.

Kareena Kapoor Khan steps into the role of DCP Ajooni Kohli, marking a striking departure from the characters audiences have typically seen her play. The trailer introduces Ajooni as a composed yet determined police officer who refuses to accept an encounter at face value. As she begins investigating the actions of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s DCP Raman Kumar, she finds herself questioning not just a fellow officer but the reasoning behind his methods. Kareena’s portrayal gives Ajooni a quiet authority, with her character relying on investigation and due process rather than confrontation. The role places her at the heart of Daayra’s central conflict and gives the actor an intriguing opportunity to explore a morally layered character.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s DCP Raman Kumar enters the trailer with a very different attitude. After an encounter involving juvenile accused, he appears unapologetic about his actions and questions whether the law can adequately deal with the severity of certain crimes. His exchange with Ajooni is particularly revealing. When Raman says, “Ek accused toh patli gali se nikal gaya,” Ajooni reminds him, “Woh patli gali nahi, Juvenile Protection Law hai.” Raman’s response - “Ek juvenile jo rape aur murder kar sakta hai, uski protection?” lays bare the ideological divide between them.

 

What makes the   intriguing is that Ajooni and Raman aren't presented as a straightforward cop-and-criminal pairing. They are both police officers, yet their methods put them on opposite sides of the same case. Ajooni’s questions threaten to expose Raman’s choices, while Raman appears convinced that his actions were necessary.

The trailer deliberately refuses to tell audiences who is right. Instead, it puts Raman’s actions, Ajooni’s investigation and the limits of the legal system under scrutiny. By the end, the bigger question isn't simply what happened during the encounter, but whether an officer can justify crossing the line when they believe the system has failed.
