Julian Alvarez has chosen to remain at Atletico Madrid until at least the January transfer window, bringing one of the summer’s most complicated transfer sagas to a pause while still keeping Barcelona’s hopes of signing the Argentina forward alive.

According to SPORT, Alvarez has informed Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany that he will continue at the Metropolitano despite preferring a move to Barcelona and despite attracting interest from several clubs.

The decision means the 26-year-old will stay with Atletico for the first half of the season.

At the same time, it also seems to rule out a late switch to the Premier League, with Arsenal having emerged as the most serious alternative during the summer.

From Barcelona’s point of view, however, this is not the end of the matter.

The Catalan side made their admiration for Alvarez increasingly clear in public, with club president Joan Laporta even speaking openly about their interest.

Alvarez has decided to stay at Atletico Madrid.

That was not received well in Madrid, where Atletico’s hierarchy remained against opening negotiations with Barcelona.

Alvarez’s decision is important because his preference for Barcelona has been one of the central elements of the entire story.

The Argentina international received multiple offers over the summer, with Arsenal especially eager to take him to England. Even so, the attacker was not convinced by the idea of joining another destination.

Atletico were not willing to sell him to Barcelona, while Alvarez himself did not want to agree to another transfer simply for the sake of leaving Madrid.

As a result, he will now continue under Diego Simeone, at least for this transfer window, with Barcelona expected to come back for him in January.

Throughout the saga, the biggest stumbling block was Atletico’s position.

The Madrid club’s board never looked prepared to enter serious negotiations with Barcelona over Alvarez.

In fact, club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin repeatedly made Atletico’s stance clear, leaving Barcelona with very little room to manoeuvre.

For the moment, Barcelona have already added Gabriel Jesus to strengthen their attack, but that does not necessarily mean Alvarez is no longer part of their long-term thinking.

The Argentina forward remains a player they greatly admire, and his own preference could keep the door open for a future move in January.
