Aston Villa have started discussions to extend Ian Maatsen’s contract beyond its present 2030 expiry date.

According to The Athletic, Villa want the 24-year-old’s importance within the squad to be properly reflected in his terms, while also underlining that they see him as a long-term part of their plans.

This follows Manchester United making an approach for Maatsen last week as they continued their search for a left-back.

United were quickly told that the Netherlands international was not available for transfer, with Villa ending the talks immediately.

INEOS had switched their focus to Maatsen after accepting that a move for Lewis Hall would not be possible this summer, with Newcastle United also treating him as untouchable.

Now, on the final day of the transfer window, the Red Devils are still without any new addition on the left side of defence.

As a result, Luke Shaw has huge pressure on him to remain fit throughout the season, while also being expected to play across all four competitions.

Michael Carrick is likely to use right-backs Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot there when needed, but an injury to either of them would create a fresh problem in that area.

Patrick Dorgu has become more used to playing in a more advanced role on the wing. However, he was originally signed as a left-back when he arrived from Lecce last winter, so he may have to return to his former position whenever required.

At present, United’s only senior arrivals this summer are Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and free-agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
