In recent years, India’s defense sector has undergone a profound transformation, shifting away from long-term import dependency toward a robust framework of indigenous design, development, and manufacturing. This strategic pivot has not only strengthened domestic military readiness but has also positioned the nation as an emerging hub for global defense exports.

Continuing this forward-looking momentum, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to conduct a comprehensive annual performance appraisal of 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The high-level review centers heavily on accelerating indigenous technology adoption, fostering critical innovations, and expanding India’s footprint in the international defense market.

Evaluating Annual Performance and Financial Growth

The high-stakes review meeting brings together top leadership and Chief Managing Directors (CMDs) from premier defense establishments to assess operational milestones achieved over the past fiscal year. Highlighting the broader strategic objective, the Ministry of Defence noted that a strong and self-reliant defense ecosystem is actively accelerating India’s journey toward global technological leadership and enhanced military capabilities.

A key highlight of the interaction involves the formal presentation of dividend cheques. CMDs representing seven major DPSUs—including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Dynamics Limited (BDL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), and Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI)—will hand over dividends for the government’s equity shares for the financial year 2025-26 to the Union Minister.

Record-Breaking Turnover and Surging Defence Exports

The financial performance of the country’s defense manufacturing backbone over the 2025-26 fiscal year reflects unprecedented commercial and strategic success. According to official data released by the ministry, the total combined turnover of the 16 DPSUs reached an impressive ₹1.29 lakh crore, marking a substantial 15.4 percent increase compared to the previous financial year.

Even more striking is the exponential growth recorded in international trade. DPSUs achieved a phenomenal 151.2 percent surge in defense exports during 2025-26 compared to the preceding year. This dramatic leap underscores the growing global trust in India-manufactured military hardware, advanced avionics, naval platforms, and electronic warfare systems.

Launching Strategic Roadmaps and Educational Initiatives

Beyond financial evaluations, the high-profile event features the official release of four major publications detailing the sector’s strategic roadmap and future trajectory. These include a commemorative volume titled ‘Aatmanirbhar DPSUs – DPSUs’ journey towards self-reliance’, which chronicles the remarkable evolution of domestic manufacturing.

Additionally, the ministry is rolling out ‘Disha’, a specialized initiative designed to provide students with hands-on awareness of cutting-edge defense technologies and modern manufacturing processes. To further outline future industrial capabilities, leadership will unveil ‘HAL’s Modernisation Roadmap’ and ‘HAL’s Indigenisation Roadmap’, setting clear operational targets to ensure sustained technological superiority in the years ahead.
